The Pelicans will have a formidable foe in a formidable setting for their season opener — and then hope to return the favor a few days later.
League sources confirmed Wednesday that New Orleans will meet the defending champion Golden State Warriors on Oct. 27, opening night for the NBA.
Golden State, which swept the Pels in the first round of the playoffs last season, also will be the opponent for the home opener on either Oct. 30 or Oct. 31 in the Smoothie King Center.
The opener at Oracle Arena in Oakland will feature the Warriors receiving their championship rings. New Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry, an assistant at Golden State last year, will receive his ring that evening as well.
The Pelicans will also play on Oct. 28 at Portland before returning to New Orleans.
The official league schedule will be released next week, but it has already been reported that the Pelicans will play at Miami on Christmas Day.
