Black and Gold blog: Why did Saints meet with ex-Florida State QB Jameis Winston at NFL Combine? _lowres

INDIANAPOLIS — Too much attention is paid to which teams are meeting with which players at the combine.

I’m guilty of it. I’ve reported on this very blog the names of a few players who are meeting with the Saints. But between formal and informal interviews, members of the Saints brass will probably meet with more than 100 players this week.

But some visits are worth talking about — especially when the player in question is Jameis Winston.

The NFL Network reported Friday that the Saints are among a handful of teams to meet with the former Florida State quarterback.

Odds are, unless something causes him to slide, Winston will be off the board before New Orleans comes on the clock for the No. 13 pick.

This is probably a case of the Saints doing their due diligence. The Saints probably haven’t had a chance to meet with Winston at any events yet and likely wanted the opportunity to sit down with him.

If for some reason Winston slides to the 13th pick, the Saints will have all the information needed to make an informed decision. It’s unlikely the team would use a first-round pick on a quarterback.

But if the team is blown away by his talents and feels he could be the quarterback of the future, it will at least have some background on who Winston is as a person. You have to do your homework so you’re prepared for all options.

The more likely scenario is that New Orleans wanted a chance to meet with the quarterback and get a read on him since there’s a chance they could be facing him twice per season over the next several years if Tampa Bay selects him with the first pick.

Either way, it’s interesting.
