NO. 1 NEED: CORNERBACK

Byron Maxwell

Position: Cornerback

Team: Seattle

Age: 27

Maxwell is the kind of long cornerback every team now covets. He’s the prize of the this cornerback class, but there have to be some concerns about playing in something other than Seattle’s Cover 3 defense.

Chris Culliver

Position: Cornerback

Team: San Francisco

Age: 26

Culliver bounced back after spending the 2013 season on injured reserve in a big way. He intercepted four passes and opposing quarterbacks posted a 66.5 rating when throwing his direction, according to Pro Football Focus.

Antonio Cromartie

Position: Cornerback

Team: Arizona

Age: 30

The 6-foot-2 Cromartie was the original long cornerback. He’ll have plenty of options on the open market, but it remains to be seen how much money gets thrown at him. Cromartie had a strong first half but faded a bit down the stretch.

NO. 2 NEED: PASS RUSHERS

Jerry Hughes

Position: Edge rusher

Team: Buffalo

Age: 26

Hughes will likely be one of the more coveted free agents if he fails to stick in Buffalo after recording 20 sacks over the past two seasons. But if the Saints want to make a splash, Hughes could be someone to keep an eye on.

Pernell McPhee

Position: Edge rusher

Team: Baltimore

Age: 26

McPhee is a versatile player who can do several different things within a defense. Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan likes to get “weird” with his defense. Sounds like a good match and New Orleans could have used McPhee’s 7.5 sacks last season.

NO. 3 NEED: OFFENSIVE LINE

Rodney Hudson

Position: Center

Team: Kansas City

Age: 25

Hudson might be one of the better centers in the league. He might cost too much, though, as it would be surprising if the Saints invested heavily at center. At the right price, he could be the missing piece on the offensive line.

Brian de la Puente

Position: Center

Team: Chicago

Age: 29

Perhaps the Saints shouldn’t have let de la Puente get away. The Saints struggled to get consistent center play last season and maybe the answer is bring back a familiar face. By doing so, New Orleans could then use Tim Lelito as a backup across the three interior positions.

Mike Iupati

Position: Guard

Team: San Francisco

Age: 27

How much are the Saints willing to invest on guards? That answer remains to be seen. If the team parts ways with either Ben Grubbs or Jahri Evans, there would be greater incentive to invest heavily as this position.

NO. 4 NEED: LINEBACKERS

Lance Briggs

Position: Linebacker

Team: Chicago

Age: 34

Briggs is aging and might only have a couple years left, but he’s still an effective player who can both cover and perform well against the run. But Briggs was limited to 17 games over the last two seasons and could be fading. He could be worth the risk on a short deal.

Brandon Spikes

Position: Linebacker

Team: Buffalo

Age: 27

Spikes is a thumper and may be one of the best run-stopping linebackers in the NFL. The problem is that he can’t be trusted in passing situations, and the NFL is becoming more and more pass heavy with each passing year.
