The New Orleans Saints did not take long to address their backup quarterback position after Chase Daniel signed with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday.
New Orleans has locked up former Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage, according to his agents, Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod, to join Drew Brees and Taysom Hill in the quarterback room.
Savage, a fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft out of Pittsburgh, started seven games for the Texans last year, completing 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,412 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions.
Offered a chance to start at the beginning of the season, Savage soon gave way to rookie Deshaun Watson, only to take over again after Watson tore his ACL at midseason.
Savage's own season ended when he was placed on injured reserve in December after suffering a brutal concussion against the San Francisco 49ers.
Based on what the Saints have said this offseason, Savage will have to fight for the backup role. New Orleans coach Sean Payton said at the NFL scouting combine that he'd like to give Hill, a second-year player with promise, a chance to compete for the backup job behind Brees.
