Veteran linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, who has not practiced all week as he tries to recover from the groin injury he suffered against Atlanta, wouldn’t close the door on playing against the Giants Sunday.

Ellerbe, who has 21 tackles in the last two games, would like to be out on the field, although he did not participate in the open portion of practice on Friday.

“I’m feeling good, it’s going better,” Ellerbe said. “I’m hopeful.”

Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t close the door on Ellerbe’s availability for Sunday, saying that the veteran’s injury could determine whether or not newly signed veteran Jo-Lonn Dunbar is active on Sunday.

The good news is that Ellerbe expects to be back soon if he can’t play against the Giants.

“It’s definitely not a long-term thing,” Ellerbe said.
