Dannell Ellerbe‘s season hasn’t gone anything like he hoped.
One year removed from a season-ending hip injury in Miami, Ellerbe arrived in New Orleans intent on staying healthy.
Instead, Ellerbe has been able to provide only flashes, making 28 tackles in 182 snaps over four games. Turf toe cost Ellerbe most of training camp and the first three games, and a groin injury suffered against Indianapolis has cost the linebacker the last four games.
“It’s definitely frustrating,” Ellerbe said. “After being out last year, I wanted this to be a comeback year.”
Ellerbe, initially listed as probable on the Saints’ injury report last week, was changed to questionable late and wasn’t able to go.
“It definitely wasn’t a setback, just not ready to go,” Ellerbe said. “But I mean, I’m close.”
When Ellerbe first suffered the injury against Indianapolis, the linebacker thought he’d be back quickly.
Instead, it has lingered and left Ellerbe hoping he’ll return against Tampa Bay.
“I thought it was going to be like a two-week thing, but I’ve just got to keep working at it,” Ellerbe said. “I got back out there and practiced last week, so I’m hopeful for this week.”
