When Sean Payton ran down his list of needs last month, there weren’t any arguments here. Cornerback, offensive line and pass rushers are needed, and the team should be active in plugging some of those holes over the next few weeks. Here’s a look at our list of biggest needs for the Saints:
The team can’t go back to war with the same guys in the line of fire. It didn’t work last year and it won’t work again next year. Perhaps some young players will make some growth and CFL import Delvin Breaux will emerge as a star, but it’s not worth gambling on it.
2. Pass rushers
The Saints have to get more out of their defensive line next season — especially since they could be without Junior Galette for some period of time if the league decides to punish the edge rusher for a recent domestic violence case that was dropped. It seems more likely this area is addressed in the draft than free agency.
3. Offensive line
How much help do the Saints need here? That remains to be seen. They’d likely be fine for another season with Ben Grubbs and Jahri Evans at guard, but one or both of these guys could end up being cap casualties.
This is another area that could move up the list depending on what happens over the next few days. Either way, New Orleans could use a linebacker with coverage skills. This is an area that lacked last season.
