Advocate file photo by PATRICK DENNIS -- Saints safety Jairus Byrd

A few minutes with ... Jairus Byrd

Saints free safety Jairus Byrd is preparing for his first NFL game in his hometown of St. Louis. Two of his NFL mentors hail from New Orleans and played for the Rams.

The Advocate: Who was your favorite player growing up?

Jairus Byrd: (2014 Hall of Fame inductee) Aeneas Williams was probably my favorite. Marshall (Faulk) and him were probably my two favorites (growing up). Marshall is a great person. Obviously everyone knows he’s a great player, but he is a phenomenal person and just a great guy, down to earth. He’s great.

TA: Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan compared you to Williams today. What’s that like?

JB: That’s high praise. Obviously, I would say I have a lot of work to do. I’m not there, but I just want to keep working every day and get better.

TA: Has Williams helped you?

JB: Definitely. Really since high school, he has been someone that has been a role model for me. Being able to watch him growing up in St. Louis has been a privilege and something I’m thankful for.
