WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — Notes and observations from Thursday’s practice:

Temper, temper: Practice was pretty low key, with players working through positional drills and on various techniques, until cornerback Brian Dixon and wide receiver Seantavius Jones locked horns for the first scuffle of camp. The fight wasn’t very intense and was quickly broken up, but it raised the intensity level for the rest of the morning.

Closer look: With Brandon Coleman out with an unspecified injury (I was told it is nothing to stress over), it allowed the Saints to get a closer look at Seantavius Jones. Drew Brees repeatedly targeted the young receiver, which provided one of the more extensive looks we’ve gotten of Jones. He dropped a pass but reeled in two more in the end zone. There’s a lot there to like.

Peat up: The first-round pick worked with the first-team offense at left tackle with Terron Armstead limited in practice. He performed well during practice, though he would have been hit with a holding penalty on one of Brees’ touchdown passes.

Solid coverage: Linebacker Hau’oli Kikaha’s chief responsibility while at Washington was to get after the passer. So, through the first few days of practice, it’s been surprising to see him drop into coverage and perform admirably. This was on full display when the Saints worked in the red zone on Thursday. He could use some more polishing up in this area, but he has enough ability to work with.

Watson up: No one is going to replace Jimmy Graham at tight end. It can’t be done. While everyone was busy talking about Josh Hill this offseason, Watson was busy getting ready to step into a larger role. He’s been the best tight end in camp and added to that Thursday by making a diving catch on a fade route in the end zone.
