Advocate sportswriter Joel A. Erickson had a live chat with online readers on Thursday about the New Orleans Saints as they head into training camp at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WVa. Here are some of the highlights:
Q: Are there any players on the PUP list?
A: Nope. Once the regular season began, the PUP list changes, and now everybody's on the active roster. That doesn't mean they'll be active Sunday, but there won't be anybody who has to wait six weeks to get into action. New Orleans must feel like those guys will be back sooner than that.
Q: How do you think our defense will do in AZ? Score prediction?
A: Keenan Lewis being out doesn't help things at all. Neither does Byrd, and not because I don't have any faith in Rafael Bush or Damian Swann. It's just that it gets further down into the secondary. I feel like Arizona will be in the 24-ish range, but I'll be honest, I've been working on something big all week, and I really haven't done much work on the Cardinals.
Q: Is it possible the Saints restructured Unger's contract to make room to sign someone?
A: That's possible, but I don't know why they would need that much room in the cap. Most of the players available now can be had for very little in terms of a financial commitment; that's why they were cut elsewhere or not picked up during the offseason. Right now, the Saints have $6 million in cap room, and that's more than necessary to bring on any of the free agents available.
Q: What will the RB rotation be Sunday?
A: Best guess here is that Mark Ingram takes the lead role, Khiry Robinson gets a good bit of work and they fit in Tim Hightower and Marcus Murphy where they can. If we see Murphy, it may be in a specific situation designed to get him the ball out in space, perhaps lined up in the slot. But I expect Ingram and Robinson to handle most of the touches.
