Luke McCown threw two third-quarter touchdown passes for receiver Preston Parker to lead the Saints to a 17-13 victory against Kansas City in both teams' preseason opener in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
McCown, in a battle with Seneca Wallace to be the Saints' back-up quarterback, completed 18 of 28 for 216 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Wallace, who has been suffering from a groin injury, did not play in the game.
Saints starting quarterback Drew Brees played two series, which lasted into the second quarter, completing 7 of 10 passe for 65 yards.
Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith completed 7 of 8 passes for 68 yards. Quarterback Chase Daniel, formerly of the Saints, was 6 of 10 for 42 yards.
Kansas City 10 points on its first two possessions to take a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, who rushed for 13 yards on five carries, made the score 7-0 with a 1-yard touchdown run on the first possesion of the game. Ryan Succop added a 42-yard field goal on the second possession.
But the Saints tied the score at 10 when McCown threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Parker in the third quarter. McCown threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Parker with 32 seconds left in the quarter to give the Saints a 17-10 lead.
