METAIRIE — The New Orleans Saints announced Monday that unrestricted free-agent safety Jim Leonhard has agreed to a one-year contract with the team.

The 5-foot-8, 188-pound Leonhard has played eight NFL seasons with four teams. He spent the 2012 season with the Denver Broncos after playing with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

A former Wisconsin standout who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, has played in 110 games with 61 starts. He has 382 tackles, 31/2 sacks, eight interceptions and 31 passes defensed. He’s also forced two fumbles and recovered two.

Leonhard also has extensive special teams experience, both on kick coverage with 33 tackles and three fumble recoveries as well as punt returns, bringing 97 back and averaging 9.4 yards per return.

In 16 games with the Broncos last season, Leonhard had two interceptions and broke up three passes.
