WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — A large number of Saints, both expected and unexpected, are not on the field for the team’s first practice after Thursday night’s preseason loss to Baltimore.

C.J. Spiller underwent arthroscopic surgery and is trying to return by Week 1. Brandon Browner (leg), Dannell Ellerbe (toe) and Delvin Breaux all suffered minor injuries that should not be cause for concern.

Safety Jairus Byrd also remains off the practice field, and he hasn’t practiced yet in camp.

Backup linebacker Ramon Humber, offensive guard Cyril Lemon and defensive tackle Lawrence Virgil, who both left Thursday’s game, are also gone.

A trio of veterans — Jamarca Sanford, Ben Watson and Anthony Spencer — who played against Baltimore are also out of practice.

Three players who missed Thursday’s game — linebacker Ronald Powell, guard Sean Hickey and tackle Nick Becton — remain off the practice field.
