Dannell Ellerbe took a significant reduction in pay to remain in New Orleans.
After restructuring his contract, the Saints linebacker will now count $3.2 million against the 2016 salary cap, according to a source. He was previously to count as a $5.9 million charge.
Ellerbe’s deal carries a $1.7 million salary, $750,000 roster bonus and $50,000 workout bonus. His base salary is fully guaranteed.
The numbers for 2017 remain the same though his base salary is not guaranteed for that season.
Ellerbe’s previous detail contained a provision that stated his salary would become guaranteed on Wednesday. New Orleans circumvented this outcome by restructuring his deal.
Ellerbe, who was acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins last offseason, appeared in six games last year. He played in only one game the previous season.
