The New Orleans Saints on Saturday said they removed linebacker Jonathan Vilma from short-term injured reserve and placed him on the 53-man roster.
The Saints (6-1) cleared a spot for Vilma by releasing cornerback Chris Carr, who was informed Friday that he would be cut.
Vilma landed on IR with a designation to return after he had arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-August. He began practicing again Oct. 21 but wasn’t eligible to play in a game until Sunday’s visit to the New York Jets, -- coincidentally the team that drafted him in 2004.
Vilma told reporters Friday that he’s ready to contribute if he plays Sunday.
“I know I’m feeling good running around,” said Vilma, who’s in his sixth year with New Orleans. “And I think I look good on film."
In Vilma’s absence, inside linebacker David Hawthorne has played well. He has combined 38 tackles, second most on the team, and two sacks.
