Drew Brees on Saturday night threw two touchdown passes during his 2014 preseason debut, outplaying Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Saints won, 23-17.

Brees led the Saints to scores on two of his three possessions of the first quarter, connecting the fullback Austin Johnson and receiver Marques Colston. Brees completed 9 of 15 passes for 128 yards. He was sacked once.

Luck, meanwhile, countered with a 21-yard TD to Coby Fleener. Luck finished with 108 passing yards on 10-for-18 passing. He also rushed twice for 22 yards.

In the competition for backup quarterback, veteran Luke McCown (3-for-10, 45 yards, 34 rushing yards) outplayed second-year pro Ryan Griffin (8-for-13, 56 yards), but neither dazzled with their play.

1) Time off proved to be no problem for Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who looked sharp and decisive in the pocket. And it's always good to see Brees feel comfortable taking off for a first-down scramble.
2) Cornerback Keenan Lewis looks poised for a stellar season. He was active, nearly intercepting two passes. Surely, the starting cornerback opposite of Lewis will be picked on more this season.
3) Defensive end Akiem Hicks must find a way to balance his newfound pass rushing rage and the NFL's quarterback-friendly rules. Against the Colts, Hicks picked up two early penalties as he tied to reach Andrew Luck (Roughing the passer; Illegal use of the hands). Two plays later, Luck threw a 21-yard TD pass.
4) The Saints running backs continued to look productive, with Mark Ingram (46 yards) enjoying a long rush of 17 yards. Travaris Cadet (31 yards) had a run of 11 yards. Pierre Thomas (13 rushing yards, 66 receiving yards) caught four passes, including a 26-yard gain.
5) Center Jonathan Goodwin started Saturday's game, and play well, helping to clear running lanes. The veteran is likely in the lead for the starting center job over second-year pro Tim Letito. In other position battles, receiver Joseph Morgan caught three passes for 27 yards; Robert Meachem and Nick Toon were targeted but did not catch a pass.
