The Saints added depth to their offensive line Tuesday by signing free-agent guard/center Eric Olsen to the active roster.
Olsen will occupy the roster spot once held by defensive end Glenn Foster, who suffered a season-ending knee injury during the 24-23 loss at Detroit on Sunday.
He also arrives after Saints center Jonathan Goodwin left the Detroit game early with a knee injury. That was the third time in four games Goodwin had to leave a contest early hurt.
Olsen was active for 16 games with the Saints in 2012 as an extra blocker. He entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft choice in 2010 out of Notre Dame for Denver. He was active for one game in Denver and was waived.
Olsen spent some time on Washington’s practice squad in 2011 before signing with the Saints for the postseason that year. The Saints waived him with an injury settlement that after he sprained his foot in the 2013 preseason. The settlement provided him with money through the seventh week of the 2013 regular season, according to a story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Olsen has since spent time with Pittsburgh and Tennessee. He remains eligible for practice squads because he has appeared in fewer than 32 regular-season games in the NFL.
If Goodwin can’t play when the Saints host Green Bay (5-2) this Sunday night, second-year interior offensive lineman Tim Lelito would start in his place. Lelito has replaced Goodwin the three games Goodwin has not been able to finish.
Lelito on Tuesday told reporters he spoke to Goodwin and that Goodwin was doing “well.” Lelito said Goodwin joked that someone in New Orleans had put a voodoo spell on him when he came back to the Saints (with whom he played from 2006-10 and with whom he won Super Bowl XLIV) after three seasons in San Francisco.
Aside from Olsen, the Saints signed offensive tackle DeMarcus Love to their practice squad and from it waived center Alex Parsons. Parsons was acquired for the practice squad after Week 3.
Love was a 2011 sixth-round draft pick for Minnesota out of Arkansas but has zero career appearances after spending time with the Vikings, Jacksonville and the New York Giants.
