Advocate file photo by SCOTT THRELKELD -- New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram (22) sweeps wide against the Atlanta Falcons during the their game Dec. 21, 2014, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Newly re-signed Saints running back Mark Ingram, speaking on the "Black and Blue Report" on the team's website, says he's glad he was able to work out a deal with the team instead of having to test the free agent market.

"I've been there for four years," Ingram said. "They drafted me. I love the city. I love my teammates. I love the coaching staff. So, I feel like we can build something special. I'm very excited to be back."

Ingram said his first plan entering free agency was go try to work things out with the Saints.

"Fortunately we were able to agree and come up with a deal," he said. "I was always talking to the Saints first."

But some of his former teammates didn't have the option of returning to the Saints for next season like running back Pierre Thomas and linebacker Curtis Lofton.

"This part of the year is bad when you see your teammates get cut or released or whatever the situation may be," Ingram said. "You never want to see guys that you are close to or you worked so hard with on the field or developed a comradery with off the field just leave the team. It's a difficult time, but it's part of the business and the nature of our business."
