The New Orleans Saints tried out three tight ends, two wide receivers and two kickers on Tuesday.
With only four receivers, two tight ends and an unproven kicker on the roster, the Saints wanted to get a look at their options in case a rash of injuries hit those positions.
“We’ve done this before,” Saints head coach Sean Payton said. “When the season starts, we try to get a short list at a number of different positions.”
The practice is pretty common around the NFL. The New York Giants tried out 17 players on Tuesday.
For the moment, the Saints feel good about where they’re at, particularly with two wide receivers and two tight ends on the practice squad.
“We had a bunch of different players in here that would be on a short list and if there ever were a need or an injury, it is up-to-date information,” Payton said. “We saw how they ran, we saw how they worked out.”
