MINNEAPOLIS — Baker Mayfield's name has already been linked to the New Orleans Saints by several reporters this season, an obvious development given the Heisman Trophy winner's size, enormous college resumé and a competitive streak that seems to fit Sean Payton's personality.
Mayfield has thought about the possibility himself.
And he'd love the opportunity, even though Drew Brees shows no signs of slowing down as he turns 39.
"I would love that," Mayfield said as he walked into the EA Sports Bowl at the Super Bowl on Thursday night. "To learn under him for however long he plays, would love that, to get a chance to be in New Orleans, a good franchise."
New Orleans might not ever get a chance to make a decision on Mayfield, who has roundly projected to go somewhere in the top 13 picks, a group littered with teams that need quarterbacks.
The Saints hold the No. 27 selection.
But if Mayfield fell for some reason, he'd have his eye on New Orleans.
"Love Sean Payton, love what they're about," Mayfield said. "That'd be a great spot for me."
Mayfield, who measured at 6-feet at the Senior Bowl in Mobile last week, will draw obvious comparisons to Brees, not just for his height but also his accuracy.
The Sooners passer has grown up watching the Saints legend.
"Oh, a big part of that," Mayfield said. "Growing up, I was a big Brett Favre guy, and then as I've grown and learned more about the game, he was a big guy for me."
