C.J. Spiller, the prize free agent on the offensive side of the ball for the Saints this past offseason, has never really found a featured role in New Orleans this year.
Now, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Spiller may not be back in 2016.
Rapoport also reported that Spiller struggled to pick up the Saints’ offense, and that the team doubts his explosiveness.
With Mark Ingram out for the rest of the season, Tim Hightowerand Spiller seemed poised to get the bulk of the carries.
Earlier this week, Saints coach Sean Payton told local media that Spiller would get a longer look than the 13.3 snaps he’s averaged this season.
“We’re going to get a chance to see more now,” Payton said. “I think the training camp injury obviously set him back some. And then it’s just a matter of the confidence and explosion off the knee. He’ll play a significant role as will Tim Hightower and even (rookie Marcus) Murphy.”
