The Saints might have overlooked tight end and wide receiver during the draft, but it only took a few minutes for the team to address those positions after the draft.
In the mad dash for undrafted free agents, the Saints reached agreements with tight ends Jack Tabb (North Carolina) and Harold Spears (New Hampshire) and wide receiver R.J. Harris (New Hampshire), sources told The Advocate. The Saints reached agreements with eight other players.
The signings should not be considered official until they are announced by the team. It is not uncommon for teams to reach agreements with players immediately following the draft, only for the player or team to have a change of heart and break the pact.
The 6-foot-3 Tabb played four years at North Carolina, where he caught 26 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns as a senior. Spears (6-foot-4) caught 56 passes for 838 yards as a senior.
Harris is one of the more interesting players in the class since he posted big numbers in each of his four seasons at New Hampshire. As a freshman, he caught 50 passes for 714 yards, and continued to build on that moving forward, posting 1,059 yards as a sophomore and 1,004 as a junior. He saved his best season for last, pulling in 100 passes for 1,551 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior.
It will be a long climb for any of the rookies, particularly at these positions since coach Sean Payton said the team is confident in Josh Hill at tight end and the group of receivers behind Brandin Cooks and Marques Colston.
But there seems to be a undrafted rookie who finds a way to contribute every season.
