Tulane formally announced its spring football schedule on Friday afternoon.
Coach Curtis Johnson once again scheduled his practices around Mardi Gras. This year, the Green Wave’s first of 15 practices will be held on Feb. 18, one day after the citywide holiday.
It’s the third time in Johnson’s four seasons at Tulane that he’s opened the day after Mardi Gras, the only exception coming last season, when a late Mardi Gras calendar allowed him to finish the session days before the holiday.
This marks the first time in two years the Green Wave can actually conduct spring practice on their own campus, after being forced to use the New Orleans Saints indoor facility during construction at Yulman Stadium. Now, the Green Wave will use its own field, starting weekday practices at 8 a.m. and weekend practices at 9 a.m.
More importantly, it’s the first time in Johnson’s tenure that he opens the offseason workouts without a question at quarterback. Rising sophomore Tanner Lee started every game when healthy a year ago and is a clear No. 1 at the position entering the 2015 season.
It also serves as the introduction for a pair of coaching staff additions. Wide receivers coach Carter Sheridan and linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Doug Lichtenberger were formally announced on Wednesday.
The session concludes on March 14 at 9 a.m., when Tulane hosts its first spring game on campus since the 1970s, inside Yulman Stadium.
