SAN DIEGO — Jake Willsey slammed two home runs, including a leadoff blast in the bottom of the eighth inning, to lift Tulane to an 11-10 win over Arizona at the Tony Gwynn Classic.
Hunter Hope and Jake Rogers also homered for Tulane (4-1) in a back-and-forth contest that had five lead changes.
Arizona (2-3) had tied the game 10-10 with three runs in the seventh, all with two outs. Tim Yandel gave up a two-run single to Alfonso Rivas, and uncorked a wild pitch allowing Cody Ramer to score from third.
Willsey’s second home run came off of Bobby Dalbec (1-1) and made a winner of Yandel (1-1).
Ryan Aguilar’s two-run double highlighted a three-run Arizona first. Hope’s three-run shot in the bottom of the frame helped Tulane score four of its own.
UNO 9, Valparaiso 0: Three UNO pitchers combined to throw a four-hit shutout helping UNO bounc back from a midweek loss at Southern Miss.
UNO (4-1) scored in the first after Ryan Calloway led off with a single. He later stole second and scored on Aaron Palmer’s infield single.
The Privateers added eight runs in the middle innings. Chaz Boyer hit a two-run homer in the fifth to start the uprising. UNO added two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh.
