MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Redbirds stunned the New Orleans Zephyrs by scoring three ninth-inning runs for a 6-5 victory Wednesday at AutoZone Park.
Memphis loaded the bases in the ninth off of Zephyrs closer Nick Wittgren. A pair of hits and a two-out walk set the stage for a bases-clearing double by pinch-hitter Ed Easley.
The Zephyrs had a season-high six doubles, including three in the second that led to a pair of runs. The Zephyrs led 2-1 in the sixth when Austin Wates’ bases-loaded double extended the lead to 5-1.
Anthony Garcia hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 6-3.
Zephyrs starting pitcher Travis Blackley allowed three runs on four hits in six innings.
Heath Wyatt (3-0) earned the win, pitching two shutout innings for the Redbirds.
Memphis improved to 69-70, and the Zephyrs fall to 56-83.
The Zephyrs’ six doubles passed the previous high of five, accomplished three times.
Wittgren suffered his fourth blown save in 21 opportunities.
