Round Rock, Texas — The Zephyrs scratched out three late runs, but the rally fell short Sunday as the Round Rock Express beat New Orleans.
Round Rock drew a two-out walk in the third inning and Jared Hoying drilled an RBI double to score the first run.
The Express sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth and scored three runs on four hits, chasing Zephyrs starter Jarred Cosart. Matt Tomshaw entered and induced an inning-ending double-play, while pitching three more innings of scoreless relief.
The Z’s offense scored a pair of runs in the sixth and added a run in the seventh inning. Express starter Nick Martinez went seven innings to earned the win. Cosart suffered the defeat and Francisco Mendez earned his third save retiring the six batters he faced.
The Zephyrs (14-15) dropped three games back of the first-place Express (17-12).
The Zephyrs placed pitcher Eric Jokisch on the disabled list and added pitcher Chris Reed from Double-A Jacksonville. ... The New Orleans bullpen pitched 4.2 scoreless innings on Sunday and have allowed only 10 earned runs in its last 56.1 innings (1.60 ERA). ... The Z’s did commit an error Sunday but the team is tops in the PCL with a fielding percentage of .990.
The Zephyrs’ next home game will be Tuesday against Colorado Springs to open a four-game series.
