COLORADO SPRINGS — Jason Middlebrooks collected three hits and added a pair of RBIs as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs 7-3 in a series opener.
The teams played two innings before rain forced a 1-hour, 47-minute delay. Neither starting pitcher returned forcing both bullpens into action.
Destin Hood doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tomas Telis to put the Zephyrs up 1-0. The lead was short-lived as the Sox tied it in the bottom of the inning. The Sky Sox took advantage of a two-out error and scored the go-ahead run on a Middlebrooks RBI single.
The game remained 2-1 until the seventh when the Sky Sox added a pair of runs, and then in the eighth they added three more runs to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Zephyrs scratched out a couple of runs in the ninth inning but lost for the fourth time in their past five games.
Brent Suter earned the win and Greg Nappo took the loss. The Zephyrs fell to 37-41 on the season and the Sky Sox improved to 39-38.
New Orleans added pitcher Asher Wojciechowski from Class AA Jacksonville. ... The Z’s also traded infielder Brady Shoemaker to the Chicago White Sox organization. ... The Zephyrs are 4-5 on their 12- game, 13-day road trip.
The Zephyrs continue the trip in Colorado Springs on Friday. New Orleans will start RHP Kendry Flores against RHP Hiram Burgos.
The Zephyrs return home on July 4 to face Round Rock in a three-game series.
