MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Randal Grichuk drove in a pair of runs as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the New Orleans Zephyrs in the first game of a four-game series.
Memphis starter Corey Baker was promoted from Double-A Springfield earlier in the day and silenced the Zephyrs bats. He allowed three hits in 6.2 innings for his first career Triple-A victory.
The Zephyrs defense committed a season-high three errors and allowed a pair of unearned runs. The Z’s had not allowed an unearned run since late May, a streak of 257 innings.
New Orleans starter Justin Nicolino pitched 6.1 innings, while allowing two runs, one earned on four hits to take the loss.
The Zephyrs were held to five hits and were shut out for the fourth time this season.
The Zephyrs are 3-2 on their 12-game, 13-day road trip.
The Zephyrs’ 15-9 record in June is the best record of any team in the PCL.
Don Kelly extended his hitting streak to a season best seven games.
The Zephyrs return home on July 4 to face Round Rock in a three-game series.
