Memphis — The Zephyrs and Redbirds played eight scoreless innings on Thursday night and as the rain started to fall, New Orleans sent eight batters to the plate in the ninth and scored four runs. Memphis answered with a run in the bottom of the inning but the Zephyrs held on.
Destin Hood lead off the ninth inning with a walk and stole second. He would score on a Tomas Telis single. Carlos Corporan added a two run ground rule double. Elliot Soto reached on an error scoring Corporan and the Z’s had a 4-0 lead.
Memphis’ David Washington drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth for the Redbirds lone run.
Starter Chris Reed pitched six innings allowed two hits in a no decision for the Zephyrs. Cody Ege worked two innings of relief and earned the win. Craig Breslow earned the save.
The Zephyrs improve to 22-30 and Memphis falls to 22-29.
Matt Juengel has raised his batting average from .156 to .280 over the past 23 games He has reached base safely in 22 of the 24 contests since May 6.
A new right side of the infield? Zach Lutz made his first career start at second base and Tomas Telis played first base for the first time this season and for the 14th time in his career.
The Zephyrs were three for eleven with runners on base and 15 for 76 over their last eleven games batting .197.
The Zephyrs continue the road-trip on Friday in Memphis. The Z’s will start RHP Jarred Cosart (2-3, 4.08) against RHP Mike Mayers (1-0, 1.69) The game will be broadcast on WODT Fox Sports 1280 AM and streamed at iHeart Radio App.
The Zephyrs next home game will be Saturday.
