PAPILLION, Neb. — The New Orleans Zephyrs and Omaha Storm Chasers split a doubleheader Tuesday night. The Z’s grabbed the first game, shutting out Omaha 6-0. In the second game, Omaha returned the favor and silenced the Zephyrs 3-0.
The first game was the completion of a suspended game from June 14 at Zephyr Field. The Z’s drilled three home runs including a pair of pinch hit home runs. A first inning pinch hit home run for Jordany Valdespin put the Z’s on the board 1-0. In the second inning Jhonatan Solano pinched hit for the injured Brandon Bantz and smoked a solo homer to left. The Z’s added a third home run, a two run shot from Vinny Rottino and the Z’s rolled to a 6-0 win.
Pat Misch worked eight innings in relief to earn his fifth win.
Matt Fields drilled a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning of the second game to give the Chasers a 1-0 lead. Travis Blackley issued two walks in the fifth inning, and Omaha tacked on two more runs. Gabriel Noriega and Whit Merrifield each picked up RBI singles and extended the lead to 3-0.
Clayton Mortensen worked six scoreless for the win. The Zephyrs out hit Omaha 7-5 and left eight men on base in the game.
The Zephyrs are 36-41 on the season, and trail Round Rock by 10 games.
