The New Orleans Zephyrs jumped on Memphis starter Marco Gonzales in the first inning scoring four runs and went on to defeat the Memphis Redbirds 5-2 on Saturday.
The Zephyrs won for the second consecutive time and improved to 14-13. The Z’s have won four of their last six games and have a winning record for the first time since July 30, 2014.
Brady Shoemaker extended his hitting streak to six games with a first inning three run home run and the Z’s jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
New Orleans starter worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and earned his third win of the season. The Redbirds threatened in the late innings, but Vin Mazzaro earned the save, striking out a pair of pinch hitters with two men on base to end the game.
The Zephyrs placed outfielder Jordany Valdespin on the 7-day disabled list. The Z’s improved to 11-0 when their starter has a quality start. Miguel Rojas extended his hitting streak to eight games, Vinny Rottino and Cole Gillespie each extended their streaks to seven games.
