Round Rock , Texas — The Round Rock Express sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh inning, scoring four runs, to rally past the New Orleans Zephyrs 8-7 on a rainy Tuesday night.
Rain from Tropical Storm Bill delayed the start of the game by 30 minutes, and it rained pretty much throughout, but the Z’s and Express were able to get the game in. Heavy rain fell in the ninth as the Zephyrs’ rally came up short.
New Orleans scored three runs in the first inning and added a pair in the second to grab a 5-0 lead. Jarrod Cosart, on a rehab assignment from the Miami Marlins, pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and exiting with a 7-4 lead.
The Express scored four times off Zephyrs reliever Grant Dayton. Chris Gimenez delivered a two-run double to put Round Rock ahead.
Will Lamb pitched 1.1 innings for the win, and Spencer Patton converted his eighth save in as many opportunities. The Z’s had two men on when Patton got Scott Sizemore on a called third strike to end the game.
The Zephyrs fell to 29-34, 9½ games behind first-place Round Rock. The Z’s have dropped nine of their past 13.
The Zephyrs have had 12 rain delays this season. ... Marlins ace Jose Fernandez will make his next start for the Jupiter Hammerheads on Wednesday instead of the Zephyrs. Due to the inclement weather in Texas, the Marlins changed the pitcher’s rehab schedule. He is still on schedule to make two more rehab starts and his Marlins season debut July 2. ... The Zephyrs continue their seven-game road trip in Texas at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday against Round Rock.
