Des Moines, Iowa — Jake Marisnick delivered a home run and a double to lead the first-place New Orleans Zephyrs to a 5-4 win over the Iowa Cubs on Monday.
Marisnick led off the game with a home run. The Z’s added a two-run home run by Zack Cox in the second inning. Marisnick doubled and scored in the second on a Juan Diaz base hit and the Zephyrs had a 4-0 lead.
Z’s starting pitcher Elih Villanueva (9-6) bounced back into All-Star form pitching six innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits.
The Z’s added a fifth run in the seventh inning on a Mark Canha double and a Justin Bour single. The Cubs rallied in the seventh, after a two-out walk to Eli Whiteside, Lars Anderson connected for two-run homer.
Iowa added a run in the eighth on a Chris Valaika RBI single and stranded two baserunners in scoring position.
Arquemedes Caminero worked a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his sixth save.
The Z’s have won four of their first five games since the All-Star break and with the win moved into first place, a half game over Nashville.
The Zephyrs added Ed Lucas and Justin Bour from the Marlins and assigned outfielder Matt Juengel to Class A Jupiter. Mark Canha extended his on base streak to 30 consecutive games, tied for second longest in PCL this season. The Zephyrs are tops in the PCL in home runs with 66.
The Zephyrs continue their eight game road-trip with the second game of a four-game series against the Cubs at 7:05 p.m. at Principal Park. The Zephyrs will start LH Andrew Heaney (3-1, 4.25) against Cubs RH Dallas Beeler (6-3, 3.56).
