Memphis, Tennessee — The Memphis Redbirds pounded out 21 hits to score 21 runs and routed the New Orleans Zephyrs 21-3 Saturday night at Autozone Park.
The Birds scored a pair of runs in the first inning on RBI signles from Scott Moore and Xavier Scruggs.
The Z’s tied the game at two in the second inning when Kyle Jensen hammered his team-leading 24th home run of the season.
The Z’s took a 3-2 lead in the game when starting pitcher Alex Sanabia singled with two outs and scored Jensen.
The Redbirds picked up two runs in the fourth to grab the lead on RBI singles from Tommy Pham and Randal Grichuk. Memphis then chased Sanabia (5-5) in the fifth inning and scored a season-high eight runs in the inning.
Pham led Memphis with a four hits, scoring four runs and driving in four, including a solo home run. The 21 runs and 21 hits allowed is a season high for the Zephyrs.
Tyler Lyons (7-1) earned the win for Memphis.
The Z’s trail first-place Nashville by 4.5 games and have 23 games to play. The Sounds were rained out on Saturday. The road trip continues in Memphis on Sunday.
The Z’s added pitcher’s Brian Flynn and Edgar Olmos along with infielder Kike Hernandez to their roster. Austin Wates snapped a 10-game hit streak with an 0-for-5 night.
The Zephyrs and Redbirds square off at 6:05 p.m. Sunday at Autozone Park.
