Papillion , Neb. — Justin Bour and Miguel Rojas each hit two-run homers, and the defense turned a triple play to give the New Orleans Zephyrs a 5-3 win at the Omaha Storm Chasers on Friday night at Werner Park.
The Omaha offense erupted early with a Whit Merrifield home run to lead off the bottom of the first. The Storms Chasers pounded out four consecutive hits to start the game and led 2-0 after a Moises Sierra RBI single. But Cheslor Cuthbert grounded to third base with two on, and the Zephyrs turned an inning-ending triple play to get Adam Conley out of trouble.
The Z’s tied the score with a two-run shot from Justin Bour in the fourth. The Chasers’ Orlando Calixte slugged a solo home run in the fourth to put Omaha back on top 3-2.
Rojas smashed his two-run homer with two outs in the sixth to put the Z’s on top. And Conley settled in, working six innings, allowing three runs and eight hits.
The Z’s added an unearned run in the ninth, and Nick Masset worked a perfect ninth for his second save.
New Orleans is 12-11 all-time in its first road game of the season. ... The Zephyrs had two home runs through their first seven games. ... The Zephyrs added infielder Juan Diaz. The 26-year-old signed as a free agent with the Miami Marlins after being released by the Chicago White Sox in spring training. Diaz batted .278 in 131 games last year with the Zephyrs. Catcher Brandon Bantz was assigned to Double-A Jacksonville.
The Zephyrs and Omaha meet in Game 2 of the series on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. The Zephyrs will start RHP Andre Rienzo (0-1, 3.60 ERA) against Chasers RHP Yohan Pino (1-0, 0.00). Listen in on WMTI-FM, 106.1.
