Albuquerque , N.M. — Johnny Monell drilled a two-out, two-run double in the third inning to give Albuquerque the lead, and the Isotopes went on to defeat the Zephyrs 5-4 on Friday night at Isotopes Park.
The Isotopes snapped a four-game losing streak. The Zephyrs have dropped consecutive games for the first time since May 21, a stretch of 22 games.
Justin Bour hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Z’s a 2-0 lead. The Isotopes tied the score in the second with a Clint Robinson solo homer and a RBI single from Erisbel Arruebarrena. The Z’s added a home run from Mark Canha to take a 3-2 lead in the third.
Monell’s two-run double in the bottom of the third gave the Isotopes the lead for good. Albuquerque added a run in the seventh.
New Orleans threatened in the ninth, scoring a run on a Bour single, but Kyle Jensen struck out with the tying run on third to end the game.
Jeff Bennett (3-2) pitched six innings for the win. Elih Villanueva (7-3) took the loss, allowing four runs in four innings. Pedro Baez pitched the ninth for his second save.
The Z’s (36-32) have won 16 of their past 22 and remain in second place, a game and a half back of Nashville, in the PCL’s American Southern Division.
Justin Bour joined the team from the Miami Marlins, and Jordany Valdespin was placed on the disabled list. The Zephyrs also added Brad Hand (ankle) to pitch Saturday on a major league rehab assignment. ... The Zephyrs continue their eight-game road trip at 8:05 p.m. Saturday at Isotopes Park.
