Des Moines, Iowa — Juan Diaz drilled a sacrifice fly to score Jordany Valdespin to give the New Orleans Zephyrs a 2-1 win in 12 innings over the Iowa Cubs. Nick Wittgren earned the save as the Zephyrs split the series.
Vinny Rottino put the Z’s on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the second inning to give the Zephyrs a 1-0 lead.
Iowa tied the game in the fifth inning when Jorge Soler grounded out with the bases loaded to score Ryan Dent.
Grant Dayton (2-1) pitched three scoreless innings and earned the win in relief. Blake Cooper (5-3) took the loss.
New Orleans is 35-40, 91/2 games back of first-place Round Rock.
The home run from Rottino snapped a streak of 109 consecutive innings in road games for the Zephyrs without a homer. The last homer was on June 4 at Tacoma.
The Zephyrs improve to 4-5 in extra-inning games this season.
