Memphis, Tennessee — The Memphis Redbirds scored 12 runs on 18 hits and blanked the New Orleans Zephyrs 12-0 at Autozone Park on Sunday.
Memphis hs 11 shutouts this season which ties the Birds for tops in the Pacific Coast League. The Zephyrs were shutout for a league-leading 12th time.
The Memphis offense slugged a season-high five home runs. Xavier Scruggs and Ed Easley each had a pair of homers. Pete Kozma added a solo shot in the sixth inning. Scruggs and Easley each drove in five runs for the Birds.
Carlos Martinez (1-0) pitched six shutout innings allowed three hits and won his first Triple-A game of the season. The 22-year old has won two games this season in 38 games with St. Louis.
The Redbirds lead the series three games to one and have outscored the Z’s 33-3 in the last two games.
The Z’s trail first-place Nashville by 51/2 games and have 22 games to play. The trip concludes in Memphis on Monday night.
The Z’s will add pitcher Rob Morey from Class AA Jacksonville on Monday. He will make the start. Morey was 3-2 with a 5.09 ERA in 11 games this season in the Southern League. The Z’s allowed a season-high five home runs and allowed their third grand slam of the season. The Zephyrs are 1-6 this season in Memphis.
The Zephyrs will wrap up the five game road trip in Memphis at 7:05 p.m. on Monday at Autozone Park. The Zephyrs will start RH Rob Morey (0-0) against Redbirds LH John Gast (3-2, 4.97). Radio: WMTI-FM, 106.1 FM.
