DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Cubs scratched out a couple of runs and held on to defeat the New Orleans Zephyrs 2-1 on Friday night in Iowa.

The Z’s scored first with an infield hit from Brady Shoemaker, scoring Jordany Valdespin in the first inning.

Iowa answered in the third with a two-out single from Matt Szcur. Mike Baxter drilled a singl,e scoring Arismendy Alcantara in the fifth to give Iowa the lead.

The Zephyrs left 10 men on base and were 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

The Zephyrs fell to 4-4 on the road trip and return home to open an eight game homestand Saturday.
