Colorado Springs — The New Orleans Zephyrs scored three runs in the ninth inning but the rally fell short as the Sky Sox defeated New Orleans 6-4 on Saturday night.
The Zephyrs scored first with a second inning run when New Orleans had three consecutive hits and Austin Nola picked up an RBI.
The Sky Sox answered with a run in the fourth inning on a two-out RBI single from Michael Reed. Colorado Springs grabbed the lead in the fifth with an RBI hit from Pete Orr to take a 2-1 lead.
The game remained 2-1 until the Sox erupted with four runs in the eighth inning. The Z’s answered with three in the ninth inning, but too little too late and the Sky Sox held on to a 6-4 win.
Austin Wates and Nola each had three hits to lead the Zephyrs. Jorge Ortega worked six innings in his Triple-A debut to earn the win. Blake Logan took the loss.
The Zephyrs have dropped 85 games for only the third time in franchise history, joining 1996 (58-84) and 1999 (55-85).
The Zephyrs continue their final roadtrip of the season on Sunday as the Z’s face Colorado Springs in Game 3 of the final series. The Zephyrs will take on Sky Sox at 2:35 p.m. CDT. New Orleans will start right-hander Jake Esch (1-2, 3.96 ERA) against right-hander Wei Chung Wang (0-0, 0.00). Radio station WTMI-FM, 106.1 will broadcast the game.
