DES MOINES, IOWA — Austin Wates had three hits and three RBIs as the New Orleans Zephyrs defeated the Iowa Cubs 9-2 to win their second consecutive game on Thursday.
The Zephyrs (6-8) used a six-run first inning to jump out in front of Iowa and cruised to the win.
Wates drilled three-run double, and Scott Sizemore had a two-run home run in the inning.
In his first start since July of 2013, Pat Misch worked five shutout innings, allowing two hits for the win.
Jeffry Antigua (0-1) gave up seven hits, nine runs and struck out two in 3.2 innings to take the loss.
Chris Valaika had a two-run home run off Fabian Williamson in the eighth for Iowa’s (6-8) only runs of the game.
New Orleans has won two in a row for the first time this season. ... The Zephyrs will attempt to win their first series of the year on Friday. ... Miguel Rojas extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a pair of hits on Thursday. ... Vinny Rottino added two hits and extended his hit streak to seven games.
