The League of Women Voters of Lafayette will hold an informational session on local water issues at noon Wednesday in the conference room of The Daily Advertiser, 1100 Bertrand Drive.

A panel will discuss water management regulations and the Chicot Acquifer.

A complimentary lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Visual artist visits campus

Visual artist Doris Bittar will give two presentations at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

At noon Wednesday in Fletcher Hall, room 134, Bittar will explore how Arabic calligraphy has influenced artists and architects. At 2 p.m. Thursday the Arab-American artist will discuss the development of her work over the past 30 years and how she uses patterns to bridge cultures.

The talks are free and open to the public.

Turkey topic of seminar

Le Centre International de Lafayette will hold a seminar at 3 p.m. Thursday about business opportunities available in Turkey. Deniz Senyurt, commercial attaché of the Republic of Turkey in Houston, and James D. Lindley Jr., international trade specialist with the New Orleans Export Assistance Center, will provide information on business opportunities in Turkey.

Musical debuts

“The Seven,” an original musical, debuts in Lafayette at Cité des Arts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The musical, written by Lafayette native Lance Bordelon, tells the story of a young man coping with being abandoned on a New York City subway as a child.

Fly fishing program set

The Acadiana Fly Rodders will hold its 27th annual conclave from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Grace Presbyterian Church, 518 Roselawn Blvd. The event features fly tying demonstrations, fly casting instruction, saltwater fly fishing techniques and outdoor photography. The event is free.

Basketball skills contest

The Lafayette Recreation and Parks Department and the Lafayette Optimist Club will hold their annual Tri-Star Basketball Skills contest at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Comeaux Recreation Center in Beaullieu Park.

The free competition is open to boys and girls who are ages 8 to 13 as of March 15.
