LAFAYETTE — Girard Park was blocked off and a student residence hall was evacuated for about an hour Thursday night after a walker reported a suspicious object in the park’s drain.
The object turned out to be an innocuous box with a flashlight mounted onto it, about two feet long and less than a foot wide, according to Troop I spokesman Brooks David with Louisiana State Police.
He couldn’t confirm what kind of material with which the box was fashioned, but said “it was made to get somebody’s attention.”
The news spread through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s emergency notification system at 8:36 p.m.
“The ENS went out without a hitch,” said Sgt. Billy Abrams, spokesman with University Police.
The caller had reported the object to Park Police minutes earlier, David said.
Girard Park Circle was closed from E. Lewis Street to Girard Park Drive and around to E. St. Mary Boulevard until authorities determined the object wasn’t a threat.
Meanwhile, students in Calais Hall of Legacy Park apartment complex were evacuated to Café Fleur de Lis off of E. Lewis Street, said Abrams.
Other students congregated on the corner of E. St. Mary Boulevard and Girard Park Circle, taking pictures of the scene with their cellphones.
The university sent an all clear at 9:47.
David said the Lafayette Police Department will be handling the investigation
