University of Louisiana at Lafayette Head Coach Billy Napier leads the Ragin’ Cajuns on to the field to play Arkansas State University on Allison Filed at Centennial Bank Stadium on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019.

Three UL athletes have tested positive for coronavirus and seven others are in quarantine after possibly being exposed to the virus, the school said in a statement Saturday night.

The news release didn't specify the athletes' names or say how many athletes played for which sports teams.

UL was the second Louisiana school Saturday to have positive cases among athletes reported.

LSU, according to sources, had several football players test positive and has a total of 30 football players quarantined.

Saturday's news also fell on Louisiana's highest total of new COVID-19 cases (870) since April 10 (970). It's the first time the state has reported more than 700 new cases in four consecutive days since April, a troubling sign as Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards moves towards Phase 3 of his plan to re-open the state.

Voluntary in-person workouts at UL began June 8.

The Ragin' Cajuns are scheduled to open their season Sept. 5 against McNeese State at Cajun Field.
