A husband shot and killed his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself Monday afternoon, authorities said Tuesday.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office identified the separated couple as Kathleen Clark, 40, and Russell Clark, 44, both of Opelousas.

Chief Deputy Hilman Popillion said investigators believe Russell Clark forced his way into Clark’s Sonny Street home by shooting the locks off a door with a shotgun.

Russell Clark then abducted the woman and forced her into a vehicle, Popillion said.

Investigators determined that Kathleen Clark jumped from the moving vehicle while it entered the intersection of La. 103 at Arlington Road about 1:30 p.m., Popillion said.

Three witnesses told investigators that Russell Clark exited the vehicle and fired a fatal shot that struck Kathleen Clark in the head.

When deputies arrived, they found Russell Clark suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release.

He was taken to Opelousas General Hospital where he later died, the release said.

The Clarks were legally married but had been separated for more than three years, Popillion said.

There were no previous reports of any domestic disturbances between the couple and neither had any previous criminal histories outside of minor traffic violations, Popillion said.

So far, investigators have only been able to determine that Russell Clark’s father had recently died and Kathleen Clark was assisting with the final arrangements, Popillion said.

“We don’t know what triggered it,” he said.
