A search-and-rescue operation is currently underway to find 10 people, including four from the New Iberia area, after they abandoned a liftboat Thursday in the Bay of Campeche.

Randy Reed, president of Trinity Liftboat Services of New Iberia, said the liftboat captain made a decision to abandon the ship after the liftboat — used in the offshore oil-and-gas industry — became disabled around noon.

The crew is believed to be on a life raft, Reed said.

Tropical Storm Nate stalled search efforts Thursday, but the winds have since died down and the seas have somewhat calmed, which allowed two helicopters to fly out today, Reed said.

“We’re just making sure that every efforts being made to find and rescue them,” Reed said.

The other members are workers with Geokinetics Inc., a company conducting seismic surveys for the Mexican state-run oil company Pemex.
