A Lafayette Parish sheriff’s jailer has been arrested and put on leave as detectives continue to investigate if he was involved in a conspiracy with inmates to harm another inmate who is a witness in an ongoing criminal case.

Deputy Calvin Powell, who has worked at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center since March 4, is suspected of trying to transfer the targeted inmate into a jail “housing unit that was occupied by several inmates who wished to do him harm,” Sheriff’s Capt. John Babin said in a news release Wednesday.

Babin said the Sheriff’s Office started investigating the matter Tuesday, when they learned about the alleged conspiracy.

“(Powell) attempted to facilitate the transfer with the full knowledge that harm would come to the inmate,” Babin said.

Powell was booked on counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice, conspiracy to commit intimidation, impeding or injuring witnesses, and malfeasance in office, Babin said.

Powell was placed on administrative leave without pay.
