Police have identified the 92-year-old woman found slain in her house Monday as Mary Terrell, KATC-TV is reporting.

Terrell’s body was discovered noon Monday in Village Du Lac on Carmel Drive in Lafayette. Police have not released any details about the cause of death, which they are investigating as a homicide.

“We don’t want to jump to conclusions because it still is under investigation,” Lafayette police Cpl. Nicole Benoit said.

“This is a very safe neighborhood. It’s quiet, and there’s no violence really,” Terrell’s neighbor and friend Kozet Andrus said. “She was healthy. Matter of fact, she was healthier than me. I just don’t get it.”

Benoit said, “We only have limited information at this point, so we are asking anyone who knew her or have more information to give us a call” or call Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.

Jeanerette teacher convicted in abuse

A Jeanerette High School teacher, accused in May of abusing a student, has been convicted on simple assault and simple battery in Jeanerette City Court, KATC-TV is reporting.

Judge Cameron Simmons sentenced Larry Brown, who taught physical education, to 30 days in jail but suspended the sentence pending Brown’s attendance in an anger management class and payment of a fine.

Brown was seen on surveillance footage in the school hallway approaching a 13-year-old student in a white T-shirt. In the video, the student appears to back away, but Brown pursues him.

“I’m not completely happy with it, but I do respect the judge’s ruling,” said Rachel Ward, the boy’s mother, following Thursday’s verdict.
