State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators are looking into an early Friday morning fire in Abbeville that killed a 48-year-old man, officials said.

Firefighters found Stephen Harbst lying on the floor of the burned wood-framed residential home, located at 205 5th St., Deputy Chief Brant Thompson said in a release.

Harbst was later pronounced dead at Abbeville General Hospital, the release stated.

Though the cause remains under investigation, fire marshal officials determined it originated in the living room, where remains of a candle and a small kerosine stove were located, Thompson said.

There was no electricity at the home.

The Vermilion Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Harbst’s death.

The case remains under investigation, Thompson said.
