LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette Parish Correctional Center inmate held in an arson case received minor burns Monday morning after he set fire to his blanket and sheets, said Lafayette Parish Sheriff Capt. Kip Judice.

Sidney Syon, 28, 200 block of Land Street, Abbeville, used a cigarette lighter to set fire to the sheets and blanket in his cell, Judice said in a news release.

Judice said it is not known how Syon was able to get the lighter into his cell.

The small fire was confined to the cell, and deputies put out the small fire with a fire extinguisher, he said.

“It never got hot enough in there for the sprinkler system to activate,” Judice said.

Syon was transferred to a hospital for treatment of his burn injuries and smoke inhalation, Judice said.

The joint investigation into Monday’s fire is being conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the Lafayette Fire Arson Investigation Unit, he said.

Syon was booked last week in connection with a Nov. 21 fire in Broussard on counts of simple criminal damage to property, improper telephone communications and simple arson and faces an additional charge of aggravated arson related to Monday’s incident, Judice said.

No other injuries were reported and there was no damage to the jail facility, Judice said.
